This was taken at 5x magnification with the MP-E65. Its common to find dragon flies nearby ponds, though the one which I found these dragon flies were a notch or 2 polluted.

My trips to waterfalls chasing damsel flies has ended me with no pictures. I cause this fella hovering very slowly around the vegetation that grows at the shore of the man made pond. Eventually it landed near enough for me to stretch and give it a few snaps. This would be, I believe my first damsel shot !

Absolutely superbly colorful when spotted. However I believe the flash didn’t manage to capture the best of this Jumping Spider. As compared to the rest of the jumping spiders seen on my page, this dude wasn’t that keen on giving me a front head shot. The few seconds of glimpse which I manage to see, revealed a very constantly fast moving Jaw… Probably it was doing some cleaning up :p

This was roughly taken at 3x magnification on a FF.

So, I still have yet to obtain an ideal 5 set picture showing the greatness of the Canon MP-E65 1x-5x F2.8 lens. Its a sunny day today, say 38-40 Degrees Celsius, I took my macro set out to the garden in search of a subject capable of displaying intense details at multiple magnifications.

No sooner then 5 minutes, after my warm up with the common black ant,

I spotted a dragonfly by a bamboo branch. As I approach this lightning fast insect at times, I draw my lens back to the minimal 1:1 magnification, and gently position my flash to the adequate angle and distance, SNAP

1) Dragonfly @ 1:1 Magnification.

2) Seems to be like a pretty still one today, Magnification now increase to 2:1

3) Hehe, adrenaline starts kicking in. Moving in for the “kill”. 5:1. Somehow I forgotten 3x and 4x :p

Right when I was done, I took a peep at my flash and saw the setting was in Manual mode. Well, I don’t know if thats correct by I normally have my Flash at in ETTL mode with 50mm distance pre-set + 0 FEC.

Its a Monday and the usual “kakis” are up for some macro action. Met @ the Rawang exit, off the North-South Express. Supposedly the venue was Templer Park, however the pro-longed traffic havoc from Rawang to the venue, had us made an early turn to well… Hutan Simpan Sekinchan, Rawang (hope I get the name correct)

Nothing much to shoot, as its a pretty matured (IMHO) jungle. High trees would give little sunlight to the ground, less vegetation resulting in less bugs.

We did still manage to find 1 or 2 bugs at the entrance as a consolidation for the trip.

We did check out Taman Rimba Kiara for a brief 1/2 hour before heading home

Went Macro shooting with a few “kakis” at the Forest Reserve Institute of Malaysia aka FRIM.
Sky was cloudy, it wasn’t that hot, but a good thing about FRIM is there are close to no mosquitoes. However, leeches can be found at large, and it would be common for one to get “sucked” at least once per visit (at least thats from my experience)

A green lynx spider ( i think ) shot up close. I do see them in many colors, but this I say would be the most common of them all.

The spider with the Big BUM. Could not fit into my frame even at 1:1. A very colorful spider indeed.
